Sering kita salah kaprah dibuat oleh dua kata ini, bahkan orang-orang yang profesionalpun kadang sulit mengimplementasikannya. Lihatlah, apakah kita selalu harus mengangkat mobile phone kita kalau berdering?, hampir semua orang pasti mengangkatnya tanpa mempertimbangkan itu urgent atau important. Memang telpon berdering itu urgent tapi kadang tidak important. Seorang manager yang biasa-biasa saja biasanya semua pekerjaan dikatakan urgent…..urgent……urgent…… Seorang manager yang luar biasa mampu memilah antara yang urgent dan important. Dan seorang yang smart biasanya akan mengerjakan yang importan, bukan selalu yang urgent.

Urgent vs. Important
Irrespective of your discipline, your position, your pathway choice, your workplace, there is one of the important matters that may impact to your future career. That is, you must able to differentiate between which one of task that categorized as urgent, which one as important.
Please read carefully the examples below!
If you are a transportation coordinator and one of vehicle is breakdown, and suppose you have back up, then ensuring back up is available on time so not disturb operation, is the urgent task. Otherwise, worst-come-worst, end-user will up-set and complaint to you. Imagine if VIP trip get the impact as well because of that. (Please noted, vehicle can be just a car, or can be fixed-wing, rotary wing, sea vessel, or any transportation vehicle usage for the business). Then, your future career may in jeopardy situation.
Suppose at the end of the year, audit team exercise the transportation section. Some of the finding are, no time sheet available for driver, no robust record on fuel utilization, not enough information in logbook, not clear in actual money spending vs. budget, etc. So for these important tasks, you fail. Then your future career may also in jeopardy.
A Production Supervisor. If unplanned shutdown occurs, so his/her duty is to ensure that production is restored immediately without diluting safety.
This is one example of urgent task for production supervisor job. If start-up process is extended without justified reason, management may say â€œwe looseâ€ opportunity to get cash during that period. Then, the supervisor future career may in jeopardy.
As supervisor, one of important task is to develop succession planning for subordinates, by close monitoring the subordinate performance, by giving them feedback, by coaching, by applying management by walking around principle, etc. Without successor, it will be very difficult for the supervisor to be promoted further, since nobody can replace. Then, the supervisor future career is in jeopardy.
Arbitrary position, this person always fulfills the job, during normal and abnormal condition. All urgent request, tasks, etc, are always being completed successfully.
However, he/she never gives feedback for any request or note from boss, never attend meeting arranged by his/her peer, and never gives input that will help company for more effective and efficient workflow. His/her future career is still in jeopardy, because failure to recognize the important tasks as explained before.
Refer to the examples above, why it could be like that? Why do we have to value both, either urgent or important task? Do we know what is different between it?
I try to give the clue. For urgent task, the impact is directly at that time, if you cannot deliver. For important task, the impact may not directly at that time if you cannot deliver, but may worst compare to the urgent ones.
