Process system consists of various equipment types, which can be categorized into four major classifications: rotating equipment, static equipment, electrical equipment and instrumentation control system. In certain coordination, these four equipment groups contribute in a unique way to sustain the integrated system availability and reliability. Management of every aspect of the four equipment groups must facilitate continuous improvement quality of both equipment operability and the foundation of the improvement process. This paper discusses the effort of strengthening the foundation of continuous reliability improvement, data and people management.

1. Introduction

Aligned with the efforts to maintain process system operation and production continuity, which marks an unbiased indication of reliability, it is highly required that an integrated reliability improvement effort of the various major equipment categories is established and implemented.

Although actual treatment of every equipment category may significantly vary, a requirement for appropriately similar management approach must be developed and established towards the same goal of improving and sustaining the integrated process system reliability.

Integrated with that thought, two aspects, namely (1) well-planned management of instrument and control system maintenance historical data and (2) development of personnel’s familiarization to their work role, required skill and competency, and required work behaviors must be established. Establishment and management of these aspects become strong foundation for continuous improvement in process instrumentation and control system management.

In addition, development of these aspects requires closed work coordination between reliability engineers and instrument maintenance leaders in evaluating process gaps, planning improvement initiatives and leading the continuous improvement process to close the gaps.
