I am working remotely with inspection department. I am having a great amount of trouble with weld rejections from Radiographic inspection of the Duct-Doubler-Boss Assy fillet welds. Much of the problem involves interpretation of the X-rays. The determination of lack of fusion is not easy to determine. The major problem is with the fillet welds of the bosses to the doublers. Currently the procedure is to fit the doubler to the duct and weld it and then fit the boss to the doubler and weld it. The belief is that between the fit and the distortion during welding there are voids or gaps left that could be interpreted as lack of fusion depending on the angle of the X-ray shot. To try to improve the welding I have come up with some ideas in the tooling design and assembly procedure, but the tools would become complex due to the curve shape of the duct and the boss location is about in the middle of the duct.

The question;

is there any specific procedure in Radiographic to determine/interpret the lack of fusion whether it is a defect or something like edge object on the adjacent side? Please imagine I have an object looks like T-joint where the boss is welded to the doubler then doubler is welded to the duct/pipe, so I have the fillet welds in two locations, those are the edges between Boss and Doubler and then the edges between doubler and duct.

Dari kasus anda adalah fillet weld, setahu saya fillet weld itu tidak pernah diperiksa dengan metoda X-Ray, cukup dengan MPI atau Penetrant saja. Apa sih yang anda cari dengan X-Ray itu,kan kalau Fillet pasti engga full penetrasi, defect yang dicari biasanya crack dan itu ada dipermukaan. Kalau juga mau pakai X-Ray di evaluasinya, biasanya interpretasinya harus ada kesepakatan khusus.
Kemudian kalau T joint full penetration mau diperiksa, cara yang paling effective yang dengan metoda Ultrasonic, seperti kalau memeriksa Jacket. So, kesimpulannya anda telah melakukan kesalahan penggunaan metoda inspeksi Tapi sorry kalau saya salah interpretasi membaca kasus anda yang menggunakan bahasa expert.
